Toon Shader Development - Spritely Cafe short film

For the Abertay Summer Shorts program 2025, I worked with a team of around 30 students to create a full short film, from ideation to final production, in 9 weeks. I handled all of the technical art on this project, and one key aspect of this was creating a shader to achieve a stylised, cartoon look in Unreal Engine. For ease of production, this shader had to run in realtime, have clearly adjustable parameters that other team members could use, and adapt to material and lighting setups created by other members of the team. I was a core part of the development team from beginning to end, spearheading asset integration, troubleshooting technical challenges, and creating the overall look of the final film.

First iterations of the shader using a premade model (Bl4ckGh0st on Sketchfab), exploring the difference between post-process and surface material shaders, outlines, etc

More detailed iteration alongside one of our prop artists. Settled on a post-processing system mimicking layer modes used in 2D art assets
